Deanna Istik, Esq.
Chief Executive Officer

As CEO of Lungs at Work, Deanna leads the organization’s legal advocacy efforts, focusing on helping disabled coal miners successfully litigate their federal Black Lung claims. A practicing attorney for over fifteen years, Deanna brings a unique and strategic perspective to this work. Early in her career, she represented coal companies, giving her valuable insight into how claims are challenged and defended. That experience now allows her to anticipate obstacles, prepare cases thoroughly, and advocate effectively on behalf of miners and their families. Her primary goal is simple: to ensure that every disabled coal miner who comes to Lungs at Work receives the benefits they deserve.

Deanna’s connection to this mission is deeply personal. Her father was a coal miner who was injured in the mines, and she witnessed firsthand the challenges that disability can bring to a family. Although he does not have black lung disease, his experience shaped her understanding of the sacrifices miners make and the support they deserve. For Deanna, this work is a meaningful way to give back to coal miners and their families.

She is especially proud of guiding miners through what can often be a long and complex legal process. By providing clear communication, preparation, and steady advocacy, she works to make the process as seamless as possible. Securing benefits not only supports a miner’s health and stability, but also helps protect the well-being of their family — something she knows matters deeply to the people she serves.
